Callaway Elyte Overview
Callaway has made an effort with their Elyte line of drivers to break the historical mold when it comes to research and development. They’ve spent more on the Elyte driver project than any other project in the company’s history. In order to speed production and increase the number of prototypes the company makes; they are now 3D printing new iterations of their driver. Callaway can’t be blamed for sitting on their hands and allowing competitors to out compete them with additional spending or creativity!
Callaway Elyte Technological Advancement
By investing in 3D printing ability Callaway decreased the time from prototype to testable unit from 90 days to 5 days. Instead of creating 3-4 different club heads before moving forward to production Callaway went through 75 iterations of the club before moving to market! While this may not actually produce a superior product, I find this rapid speed of development fascinating and I give Callaway kudos for their creativity! For more details on their 3D printing process and R&D process you can listen to this interview with Callaway golf’s Brian Williams.
Practical Model Changes
Callaway’s previous model (the Callaway Paradym) focused on being “fast”. Fast simply means that a company attempts to use lighter materials and weight distribution to increase club head speed. Of course, a lighter club without added forgiveness leads to greater shot dispersion and less forgiveness. The Callaway Elyte is aimed at maintaining the speed of the previous model while adding forgiveness on off center hits where players need it most. Let’s have a look at some of the changes and upgrades with the newest Elyte models.
