Uneekor QED Launch Monitor Review

Uneekor QED

Uneekor QED – Overview

The Uneekor QED launch monitor was released in the US in 2019 to much fanfare! It’s an overhead launch monitor that uses high speed cameras to capture accurate ball data and estimated club data. I bought my Uneekor QED launch monitor in January 2020 (it was very prescient timing). I have used it heavily with the simulation software called TGC 2019 and GS Pro. The QED works seamlessly with both versions of simulation software as well as a number of other popular golf sim software.

How does the Uneekor QED work?

It’s dual cameras measure the following ball attributes and send them to the Uneekor software and/or your golf simulation software. These ball attributes are then used to calculate ball flight via the Uneekor or golf simulation software ball flight algorithms.

  • Ball Speed: The speed at which the ball leaves the club face. If you’d like, we have a great article for information regarding the best golf balls for high swing speeds.
  • Spin Rate: Heavily impacts trajectory and distance
  • Launch Angle: The angle at which the ball leaves the club face after impact. Launch monitors are often used to measure and optimize launch angles, especially by those seeking to maximize distance with their driver. For a better understanding of launch angles and the best way to optimize your distance, please read through our loft and launch angle article.
  • Club Path and Face Angle (estimated): This helps you better understand why the ball started on or offline. It also can help you understand why you’re generating side spin.

Uneekor QED Pros

  1. Dual High-Speed Cameras: The QED uses two high-speed cameras that can operate at over 3000 frames per second (fps). Not only does this produce accurate ball data, but it also allows for slow motion replays of the club contacting the ball.
  2. Infrared Technology: The Uneekor QED unit uses infrared technology to measure ball physics, which means that no specific lighting conditions are required. This is ideal for a simulator environment because they are often low light environments preventing overhead light from splashing onto the simulator screen and the image cast by a projector.
  3. Overhead Mounting: The QED is mounted overhead which allows for a single calibration rather than the continual calibration sometimes required by floor standing units that are easily moved or knocked over. Lastly, it makes right and left handed interchangeable play seamless. This is often a drawback people have when inviting friends to play on a floor standing monitor.
  4. Video Camera Functionality: One of the more unique features of the Uneekor series of launch monitors is their ability to add cameras. These cameras can then interact seamlessly with their software, called Uneekor View. The high speed cameras allow for slow motion replays of the golf swing from multiple angles. Additionally, this can be really handy for in-depth swing analysis or remote lessons. They also provide some added comedy when family or friends hit a poor shot – the replay options are nearly limitless.
  5. Simulation Compatibility: The QED is compatible with just about all simulation software that isn’t locked to a single launch monitor (like Trackman). This includes GS Pro, TGC 2019, E6 Connect and Uneekors own proprietary course software.

Uneekor QED Cons

  1. Setup Complexity: While the QED is user-friendly once installed, the initial setup can be complex and may require first time assistance from their support. The upshot is that their support is very responsive, knowledgeable and can usually get you up and running pretty quickly.
  2. Cost: I would explore The Indoor Golf Shop for the most up to date cost of the QED. While this is less than some of their other high end launch monitors, this is generally not considered a budget launch monitor. Some of the well known Foresight launch monitors as well as two of Uneekor’s floor standing launch monitors can be had for well under $5,000.
  3. Ceiling Height – Uneekor QED can not be mounted any lower than 9 feet. For many people this will mean that their basement or garage isn’t suitable for a QED.
  4. Marked Balls – The Uneekor QED requires the use of marked balls with a 3 dot pattern. As of this writing, there are no major manufactures (Titleist, Taylor Made etc..) that manufacture a ball specifically for use with the Uneekor QED. There are many quality golf balls that can be used that closely mimic balls like the ProV1 but they can be expensive and sourcing can be a bit of a pain.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does Uneekor QED connect to my PC?

The Uneekor QED ONLY connects to a computer via ethernet cable (Cat6). Your PC will either need an ethernet port or you will need a cat6 to USB converter.

How high does my ceiling need to be to mount the Uneekor QED?

The official specifications from Uneekor require a 9′ – 10′ ceiling. Although, my installation has the monitor about 8.5′ above the hitting pad and I have no issues.

Is Uneekor QED a good launch monitor for both right and left handed golfers?

Yes! The Uneekor QED can be used interchangeably by right and left handed golfers. The overhead unit reads the ball data in the same manner regardless of which side of the ball the shot is struck. This makes is a better choice for shared play with friends than many floor standing launch monitors.

Does the Uneekor QED require marked balls?

Yes. It requires marked balls with a specific three dot pattern around the balls. The launch monitor measures spin, trajectory and ball speed using measurements from these dots. Uneekor sends a dozen balls with purchase of the launch monitor. Additionally, high quality urethane balls, marked Prov1s, and ball stickers can be applied to enable you to use the ball of your choice. While marked balls are not difficult to obtain, it does add an element of annoyance

Are there any good video reviews of the launch monitor?

Yes, I would recommend GSV’s video review of the Uneekor QED.
